Initially I begrudged the infographic project, given that I do this course to make and study films, in terms of helping me further my goals this task seemed like a bit of a waste of time. Additionally the piktochart program is unnecessarily 'fumbly' there is a specific way to do everything, - it almost takes a 'my way or the highway' level of difficulty.
However once I'd learned how to use piktochart and had chosen the topic of my infographic it did come enjoyable. In the groups we were assigned to, Me, Marc Sumner, Jord Sterck and Joseph Stanley we decided that since we had to make 4 infographics and that there were four of us we would take one each, based around ideas of our own choice and then report back regularly to the group to show how progress, where we would then give each other advice or comments. This allowed the four of us to make infographics about the topics we were invested in - instead of having to make 4 that we all agreed upon.
While we did intend to meet up regularly to work on them together, we only met up physically a handful of times - due to peoples schedules: work, when they were home for Easter etc. However there was a steady amount of discussion about the work on Facebook, due to the nature of social media we were readily able to support each other and detail our progress and our concerns if we had any. This allowed us to work quickly as we didn't have to wait to gather everyone together to work on an infographic one at a time, there was almost always one being developed.
If unit X was trying to show us just how you can use the media effectively then this task did so, just because we didn't meet in person does not mean we didn't work as a team - we were able to construct 4 infographics without meeting regularly, because social media helped us to stay in touch - it dawned on me that the people I was working with could have been all over the globe and that media allows us to effectively work in collaboration.
Whether our infographics are any good is another matter, its obvious which ones we did first (ComicsTop10) and which we did last (TypicalTwitter) but our ability to use the program developed as we progressed. I'd say that despite my reservations this actually was an interesting assignment.
