So I take it that I'm just meant try and summarise my weekly media output and see if there is any patterns that have emerged.
Well first up what was most obvious to me was my routine of checking my phone and then checking my computer and my 5 shall we call them 'update' sites, these sites are:
-Facebook
-Empire Online
-ComicBookResources
-(My) Hotmail
-Moodle
I call these 5 my updates sites as thats what I use all of them for, Facebook is for my friends (and as of recently the unit X project - the facebook page for that has been really useful), Empire for movie news, CBR for comics, TV and other media, Hotmail for things like job interviews, bank statements and phone bills and Moodle for university. These sites (maybe not Empire and CBR) do help me organise my life, so I know what I'm doing and where I'm supposed to be. In fact while I was at home over Easter since my Dad has no internet (he's moving house) I didn't check my hotmail account and as a result missed 4 job interviews and further application tests. You never really notice it but these sites become a big part of your life.
I became further aware of how important the internet is to me during the Easter break - as I mentioned no internet back home - so instead of just being able to browse and watch whatever online, or in fact listen to music as my music comes from YouTube, there was very little to do besides read and watch TV (all of my friends have jobs now so were busy during the day).
Additionally I don't know what I would do without CuCirca and Primewire. Yes this means I'm watching content without paying for it, but besides the fact everyone does it I can't afford to pay for it. When I'm older and have a well paying job and are able to pay for these things, such as a Netflix subscription I'll pay for it - but since I can't I won't. Its also a sign that everything really is online these days, you can search for any film, any TV show into Google (or the web browser of your choice because people use Bing apparently) just add watch online to the end and you're golden.
Having done this task it may also be a good idea to reduce the amount of texts I'm paying for in my phone subscription and get a higher internet usage as I barely send proper text messages and use Whatsapp for the majority of messaging. I've talked to friends about the difference between Whatsapp and texting and its that Whatsapp is generally quicker, used for fast bursts of conversation whereas a text is usually longer - furthermore you don't have to bother with formalities such as kisses at the end of Whatsapp messages, because you're sending so many so fast kisses just slows you down. All of that sounds kind of ridiculous, that there are specific ways of using one messager compared to the other but its true.
Finally this media diary has shown me that with better organisation I could capitalise on my time, and that I should cut down on binge watching Tv shows (such as House of Cards) as it consumes most of my day.
While this task has taught me just how much I use certain websites and which kinds of social networking i use and so forth, besides the point above (on better organisation) I don't particularly know what do with what I've learned. So I've realised my dependence on media, but given that there's nothing unhealthy with my usage or there's not really much change to be made I don't think there's much I can do with this knowledge.
